Aesthetic Medicine Training Eligibility Requirements
If you are considering aesthetic training, one of your first questions may be whether your professional background is accepted.
Derma Medical provides aesthetic training for qualified healthcare professionals. This includes people who are completely new to injectables, as well as experienced practitioners who want to develop more advanced skills.
This page explains who is eligible to train with Derma Medical in the UK. Eligibility to attend a training course is separate from meeting the professional, prescribing and insurance requirements needed to practise aesthetic medicine.

What Do I Need to Start Aesthetic Training?
You do not need previous aesthetics or injectable experience to begin at foundation level.
The Foundation Botox and Dermal Filler Course is designed for eligible healthcare professionals who are new to aesthetic medicine. It introduces the core knowledge and practical skills involved in botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments.
More advanced courses and treatment-specific masterclasses may require previous foundation training or relevant practical experience. Always check the entry requirements for your chosen course before booking.
Botox® is a registered brand name. The term “botulinum toxin” is used on this page when referring to the treatment category generally.
Eligibility by Professional Background
Doctors
Registered doctors can train in aesthetic medicine with Derma Medical.
If you have no previous injectable experience, foundation training is the usual starting point. Doctors who have completed foundation training and gained relevant experience can continue to advanced courses and treatment-specific masterclasses.
When moving into practice, doctors must work within their competence, follow relevant professional guidance and have appropriate indemnity cover.
Dentists
Registered dentists can train in aesthetic medicine with Derma Medical, including those with no previous aesthetics experience.
A dentist’s existing knowledge of facial anatomy, patient assessment and injection techniques can support the move into aesthetics. However, appropriate treatment-specific training, prescribing arrangements and indemnity cover are still required before providing treatments.
Nurses and Midwives
Registered nurses and midwives can train in botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments with Derma Medical.
Foundation training is available for those who are new to aesthetics. Nurses and midwives can then continue to advanced training as their knowledge and practical experience develop.
You do not need to be an independent prescriber to attend aesthetic training. However, botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine. A nurse or midwife who is not an independent prescriber must work with an appropriately qualified prescriber and have a valid prescription in place before administering it.
Nurses and midwives must also follow NMC requirements, work within their competence and have appropriate insurance before treating patients.
Dental Therapists
Eligible dental therapists can undertake aesthetic training with Derma Medical.
Those who are new to injectables can begin with foundation training before progressing to more advanced courses. Dental therapists must consider their professional scope of practice, prescribing arrangements and insurance requirements before providing aesthetic treatments.
Pharmacists
Pharmacists registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council can undertake aesthetic training with Derma Medical.
Foundation training is available for pharmacists who have no previous injectable experience.
An independent pharmacist prescriber can prescribe botulinum toxin for suitable patients within their competence. A pharmacist who is not an independent prescriber will need to work with an appropriately qualified prescriber before administering prescription-only treatments.
Specialist aesthetics insurance is also required before treating patients. Practitioners should confirm that their policy covers each treatment they intend to provide.
Paramedics
Eligible paramedics can train in aesthetic medicine with Derma Medical.
No previous injectable experience is required for foundation training. Paramedics can progress to advanced education as they gain further training and practical experience.
Before practising, paramedics must consider their professional scope, prescribing arrangements and appropriate indemnity cover.
Physiotherapists
Eligible physiotherapists can train in botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments with Derma Medical.
Foundation training provides a starting point for those who are new to aesthetic medicine. Further courses can be taken as the practitioner’s experience and competence develop.
Physiotherapists must work within their professional scope and have suitable prescribing and insurance arrangements before providing treatments.
Physician Associates
Eligible physician associates can undertake foundation aesthetic training with Derma Medical.
Physician associates cannot prescribe medicines, including botulinum toxin. They also practise under supervision and cannot work as completely independent practitioners. Anyone considering aesthetic practice must have appropriate prescribing, supervision and clinical governance arrangements in place.
Training eligibility does not change the professional restrictions that apply to physician associates.
Operating Department Practitioners
Eligible Operating Department Practitioners can train in botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments with Derma Medical.
Those with no previous aesthetics experience can begin at foundation level. They can then continue their education through advanced courses as their competence and practical experience develop.
Before providing aesthetic treatments, ODPs must consider their scope of practice, prescribing arrangements and insurance requirements.
What Do I Need to Start Aesthetic Training?
Healthcare professionals who qualified outside the UK may be eligible to attend Derma Medical training.
International applicants are required to provide evidence of their medical, dental or nursing qualifications. If you are unsure whether your qualification is accepted, contact the Derma Medical team before booking.
International delegates are covered by Derma Medical’s training insurance while completing supervised practical training with the academy.
Attending a UK training course does not provide UK professional registration or permission to practise in the UK. If you intend to work in the UK after training, you will need to meet the registration, prescribing, professional and insurance requirements that apply to your role.
Requirements in other countries may be different. It is your responsibility to check the rules that apply in the country where you plan to practise.
Do I Need Previous Experience in Aesthetics?
Not for foundation training.
If you are completely new to aesthetics, the Foundation Botox and Dermal Filler Course is the usual starting point.
If you have completed foundation training or already have relevant experience, you may be ready for the Advanced Botox and Dermal Filler Course or a treatment-specific masterclass.
Entry requirements vary between courses. Check the individual course page or speak to the team before booking if you are unsure whether your previous training is suitable.
Training Eligibility and Permission to Practise
Being eligible to attend a Derma Medical course does not automatically mean that you have met every requirement to practise independently.
Before providing aesthetic treatments, you may need to consider:
- Your professional registration and scope of practice
- Your competence and level of clinical experience
- Prescribing arrangements for prescription-only medicines
- Professional indemnity or specialist aesthetics insurance
- Clinical governance and supervision
- The legal and professional requirements that apply where you practise
Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. It must be prescribed for an individual patient by an appropriately qualified prescriber.
Practitioners are responsible for following the guidance issued by their professional regulator and checking that they meet the requirements for each treatment they provide.
Do I Need Insurance?
Appropriate insurance is needed before you begin providing aesthetic treatments.
The type of cover required can depend on your profession, insurer and the treatments you intend to offer. Standard professional indemnity may not automatically cover aesthetic procedures.
Before treating patients, confirm with your insurer that your policy covers every procedure you plan to provide.
Insurance for supervised practical training during a Derma Medical course is separate from the insurance you will need for your own practice.
What Should I Check Before Booking?
Before choosing a course, check:
- That your healthcare profession is accepted
- Whether professional registration is required
- The entry requirements for the individual course
- Whether previous aesthetic training or experience is needed
- Whether your previous training is accepted for an advanced course
- Any evidence of qualifications or registration you may need to provide
If you are new to injectable aesthetics, foundation training is usually the appropriate starting point.
